About Big C

Based in Norwich, Big C is a local charity committed to the care and support of cancer patients and their families in Norfolk and Waveney, and to funding cancer research programmes. Big C is not affiliated to a national charity; it exists independently and solely to raise funds for local people affected by the disease. With the help of the local community the charity has raised £13 million since its foundation in 1980.

Now in its 28th year Big C needs your help to continue improving the lives of those in the region. One in three people will develop cancer at some point during their lives, and few of us will escape being affected by the disease in some capacity. With the support and collaboration of the people of Norfolk and Waveney Big C can, and does, make a huge difference to the lives and families of those affected by cancer.

Big C's ethos is that all the money raised is used to benefit the local community, by providing support and information, care and treatment and by financing significant research at the University of East Anglia and for equipment at local hospitals and surgeries across the region.

One of their recent projects has been the building, fitting and furnishing and running costs of the Big C Family Cancer Information and Support Centre at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, which opened in May 2006 and had its Royal Opening by HRH The Duke of Gloucester a year later.

The design and services offered by the Centre have been created from a consultation of patients, carers, community groups and health professionals. The style is deliberately and distinctly different from that of the hospital, with an emphasis on informality and family based support.

The Centre provides a relaxed, informal environment for approximately 3,000 cancer patients and their families every year.

Services provided by the Centre include:
* An information library with books, leaflets and videos on various aspects of cancer
*Information on support groups and local services
*Support and counselling
*Internet access for information on cancer
*Complementary therapies
*CAB Advisor for welfare benefits advice
*'Look good, feel better' makeover sessions
*Scarf tying sessions

No appointment is necessary to visit the centre which is open Monday to Friday 9.30am - 4.30pm (closed Bank Holidays). Late opening is on the first Wednesday of every month until 7pm.
